5. Focus forward, not on the rear view mirror

It goes without saying that the best way to move forward is to focus on the path ahead, not the one left behind. You must never be consumed by the past if you plan on progressing.
Don’t focus on the past, it is not where you are going
You might have indulged in mistakes in the past or made regrettable decisions you can only wish you could reverse. But this day is a new day and yesterday’s scars are a thing of the past.

The whole point of rising after every fall is to progressively move away from the position from which you fell. So if you are going to continuously revisit that same pit you once fell in then there is not much progression, is there?

This does not necessarily mean that you have to forget the past, because it is almost impossible to do so. However you have to be at peace with the past so that you move on.

The distracting charm of past achievements...

Contrary to the belief that reliving past mistakes is the biggest reason for stagnation, obsessing over past victories can also be equally devastating.

Many people think that it is only the bad memories that erect speed bumps when one is cruising for success. However it is very possible to be halted by the charm of a past achievement.

Unawares, you might spend the whole day admiring the depth and beauty of the feat such that you forget to move forward. This is so common to an extent that a good number of people who accomplish great achievements never achieve anything else beyond the limitation of their initial achievement.

Imagine it as being like the feeling of buying a brand new Ferrari.

“What a car….what a car!” You may initially think to yourself. And rightfully so too, don’t be mistaken about that. It will indeed be a beauty.

Down the line, the only problem is instead of trying you buy the latest manufactured upgrade you are still thinking, “What a car…”

So your initial achievement would have drawn you away from the realm of reality. You are subconsciously blinded by a procurement.
And even though your heart is content and full of joy, you are lagging behind advancement-wise.

When you lag behind and stop evolving with the rest of the world, it is only a matter of time before both you and your achievement become obsolete.

Which paves way for the next point;

6. Evolve

We are dynamic creatures living in a dynamic world. The relationship between the us and our world is fairly simple; A group of individuals make a world upon which each lone individual is dependent.

This means if you stop rolling along with the world’s advancements the world will not stop moving forward for your sake. It will probably roll you over!

Everyday people are producing and implementing new methods to make each aspect of life easier or more efficient.

It could be technology-wise where automation systems are being fast upgraded. Socially, applications and the social media are connecting people across the globe in a once unimaginable manner. In Agriculture, equipment is being designed and manufactured to perform tasks at a faster rate and with intensive farming maximizing on the smallest of available farming ground.
You see where I'm going with this...? There are innovations continuously sprouting in each and every field of expertise.

The innovation is not only materialistic, improvement ideas and theories are budding all over.
Now, the whole key to success is to never get left behind. Especially in your field of expertise.

Ignorance is never an excuse, it is your own demise. You can never use ignorance as an excuse to compete in a drag race using an outdated engine in an age where vehicles are being equipped with engines of ridiculous capacity. You will be massacred.

You have to move along with the times. To stay at the top of your industry, you have to stay in touch with the advancements within that particular field. Sometimes success is achieved not through what you can do but rather what you know. Information is priceless.

The knowledgeable ALWAYS sit on top of the food chain, right above the hard workers!
If you are a hard worker but lack the adequate knowledge then you will probably spend the rest of your life working under someone who may not even be as hardworking as you are but possesses the information that you lack. FACT.
You are at an advantage over that which you know and you pay for that which you do not know.
Hard work without any acquired relevant field knowledge is self injustice. And as mentioned earlier, the knowledge is dynamic so you have to make an effort to stay in touch with it.

7. Self belief

No man can excel beyond the limitations of his own belief – Myles Munroe
To succeed, you have to first believe in your own ability to achieve whatever goal you set before yourself. In as much as defeat starts in the mind, success also starts from the same place.

You have to believe it yourself first. If you are not going to believe in yourself then who would you expect to?
Unwavering belief in your own capabilities is essential to a certain point. It keeps you functioning at the highest level of your potential.

There are two types of self belief:
  1. Thinking that you can
  2. Knowing that you can

Even though you may have not put any action yet to your plans, there is already a difference in mental positioning between someone who THINKS they can and another who KNOWS he/she can.

The difference in depth of conviction among individuals is very often what determines the difference in height of the success that is achieved.

8. Be true to yourself

Always take a moment to reflect. It could be at the start or end of each day. Be true to yourself enough to give a just assessment of the day’s festivities.
From your meditation, make a compilation of your wins and losses from the day. Clearly state what you did good, what you could have done better and above all, how you can improve.

The thing is, everyday you might trick some people into believing that all is well when in actual fact the truth is parallel to what their eyes see. But you cannot feed yourself the same bias. After all, no one is listening to your confessions, so why hold back to yourself?

This daily meditation helps in self edification. What it does is it helps you point out the part of your self-image is false. You need to either live up to it or lose it, the choice is yours.
